WELCOME TO A BOURBON COUNTRY WEEKEND.
It’s fall in the bluegrass and we’re hosting the Bourbon Shindig in celebration of our 10th year anniversary (read: ‘it’s gonna be a helluva party’). The Shindig weekend includes authentic Southern celebrations and behind-the-scenes access to Kentucky’s world-famous Bourbon & equine industries. Highlights include: private tour of Four Roses Distillery; private tour of Buffalo Trace Distillery, hosted by Freddie Johnson (2018 Bourbon Hall of Fame); a VIP tour of Coolmore’s Ashford Stud, home to iconic stallions such as Justify (2018 Triple Crown winner), Uncle Mo, California Chrome & American Pharoah (winner of the 2014 Triple Crown AND 2014 Breeder’s Cup); and the 2018 Bourbon Shindig, a Bourbon-lover’s paradise, featuring rare & exclusive Bourbons.
DISTILLERY DAY (Friday, Nov 9th)
Buffalo Trace | Ever wanted to see where Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon is aged & bottled? Buffalo Trace is home to many great Bourbon brands, including the coveted BTAC (‘antique collection’), Weller, and other iconic brands. It’s also home to such bold experiments as Warehouse X and the Single Oak Project. Located in Frankfort (Ky) along the banks of the Kentucky River, Buffalo Trace is experiencing record-breaking tourism visits, and their expansion shows no signs of slowing down.
We’ll join Freddie Johnson, a 3rd generation employee and 2018 Bourbon Hall of Fame awardee, for a special ‘hard hat’ tour and tasting. Time with Freddie is simply special; you might have seen him before, as he’s a leading role in the celebrated documentary NEAT: The Story of Bourbon (available through Amazon Prime). After our tour & tasting, he’ll join us for lunch at the distillery before sending us off on the next adventure.
Four Roses | Just a short drive to Lawrenceburg (Ky), the Spanish Mission-style architecture of Four Roses Distillery will capture your attention upon arrival. Built in 1910, this Distillery calls on ten unique recipes (5 mash bills, 2 yeast strains) to make some of the most coveted Limited Edition Bourbon releases each year. This is where Brent Elliott (Master Distiller) has continued the traditions of producing great Bourbons. We’ll learn about their rigorous grain selection process, their latest production milestones & the quality control that goes into producing their finest Bourbons. After a specially-curated tasting session, you’ll appreciate the time-honored traditions of America’s native spirit. The short drive back to Lexington will give you enough time to spruce up for supper.
SHINDIG DAY (Saturday, Nov 10th)
A visit to Kentucky is never complete without a trip to Horse Country. On Friday, November 9, you’ll get VIP access to one of the world’s most celebrated horse farms, Coolmore’s Ashford Stud. You’ll get a chance to get up close and personal with some of the greatest living thoroughbreds and see their lavish way of living once they retire from racing and go on to a career in breeding. This isn’t open to the public, but we’ll get to stroll through the stallion barns and get a glimpse into the opulence that these Triple Crown winners enjoy. If we’re lucky, we’ll get to share a moment with Justify, who won the 2018 Triple Crown. After that, we’ll all rest up for the Bourbon Shindig later that day.
THE BOURBON REVIEW SHINDIG
Can you hear the ice being hand-chipped? Or the metal shaker being tossed? Just a short walk from the 21c Hotel, we’ll gather at Belle’s Cocktail House (one of America’s Best Bourbon Bars) for this Bourbon-immersion experience. The “Shindig” tradition invokes a social gathering that is both genteel and casual. The Bourbon Shindig brings together dozens of rare Bourbons and great Southern-style food under one roof. You’ll taste multiple rare & exclusive Bourbons, as you stroll throughout the 3 floors of Belle’s Cocktail House. Come join the founders of The Bourbon Review for their 10th year anniversary celebration. You’ll get to mingle with Master Distillers, for this historic event.
Participating Bourbons include selections from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (including Pappy), and Four Roses expressions. Dozens of other Bourbons will be available, as well, including Michter’s, Wilderness Trail, Blanton’s, & Woodford Reserve. [note: we’re adding more Bourbons, so be sure to follow our social media for updates]
Located in downtown Lexington, Belle’s Cocktail House features three floors – each introduces a distinct atmosphere. Upon entry, you’ll marvel at the onyx-lit back bar and the giant “U-shaped” bar where some of Bourbon Country finest bartenders serve craft-seasonal & classic cocktails; or they can recommend any of the house private barrel selections. The 2nd floor is reminiscent of a classy hunt club, because the exposed-brick walls are adorned with animal mounts and vintage ski poles. After strolling through both floors you’ll want to take in the majestic rooftop bar, which features a marquis view of Lexington’s skyline.
The bar is an homage to a famous madame, named Belle Breezing. Belle’s parlor was once dubbed “The Most Orderly of Disorderly Houses,” and was graced with the presence of prominent patrons from across the spectrum of influence. Her history is intertwined with the cultural backdrop of Lexington, across many decades; her actual parlor was located just blocks from downtown Lexington, and epitomized the ‘gilded age’ in all it’s grandeur. Before you leave for the evening, be sure to tilt your bowler hat in her direction (there is a portrait in honor of her, above the fireplace on the first floor).
Upon conclusion of the Shindig, you’ll be on your own for dinner, at one of the many local eateries nestled throughout Lexington’s downtown.
