Heaven Hill’s Bourbon Heritage Center is celebrating Father’s Day with The Father of Bourbon. On Tuesday, June 9th, the distillery is releasing around 100 special Father’s Day gift packs with two of the Elijah Craig family’s most popular expressions.

For $295, you can treat your dad (or yourself, we won’t tell) to two top shelf bottles – Elijah Craig 18 Year Single Barrel, bottled at a sippable 90 proof, and Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, both hard-to-find companions to the standard 94 proof Small Batch. You must pre-order the duo prior to pickup at the Bourbon Heritage Center in Bardstown, Kentucky, with five time slots available.

The line is named for Elijah Craig, the Baptist preacher and businessman who settled the town now named Georgetown, Kentucky in 1784. He’s said in some bourbon lore to be the first to have aged his whiskey in charred oak barrels, although the details are unclear. The brand describes some of the varying tales on their website, but either way, the stories earned him the title The Father of Bourbon.

One account tells of an accidental fire in Elijah’s mill, which charred the wooden barrels and changed the whiskey inside. Makes for a great story at your next Bourbon tasting, doesn’t it? Other accounts speak of Elijah storing his wares in former sugar barrels, and becoming impressed with how the charring of the barrels improved the flavor. The truth is, no one really knows how Elijah began charring his barrels, but once he figured it out, it’s easy to understand why he continued to develop the process and changed Bourbon making forever.
